Seattle Maritime Festival
2010
Save the Date - May 6 - 8, 2010
Don't
miss the boat, when the Seattle Maritime Festival, featuring the world's
biggest tugboat races, brings a cargo ship full of free family fun to the
Downtown Seattle Waterfront from May 6-8, 2010.
The highlight of
the Festival is the annual tug races set for Saturday, May 8, during the
Family Fun Day. This year, over 40 tugs and workboats are expected to
participate in the 26th Annual Seattle Tugboat Race
Championships
Family Fun Day features three heats of tug races,
workboat parade, Chowder Cook-Off, boat building competition, survival
suit races, harbor tours, kids' activities, displays and lots of other
free fun.

L&I Offers Free Workshops for New
Employers
Wage and hour rules, workplace safety, and minimizing workers'
compensation costs are just a few of the topics covered in a free workshop
the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) is now offering for new
employers. "This workshop will save you time, money and trouble down the
road, and take the mystery out of the various things an employer does with
L&I," said Ron Langley, L&I's small-business liaison.
Employer's Introduction to L&I, is a free workshop
geared both for new businesses and those hiring for the first time. The
workshop will cover employers' rights and responsibilities and provide an
overview of the services L&I provides. Employers who attend will also
learn about workplace safety and health requirements, claims management
strategies, risk management, quarterly reporting requirements and wage and
hour laws.

Northbound I-5 CLOSED at Night
Crews will close northbound I-5 between Boeing Access Road and Spokane Street at 11:59 p.m. on the following nights:
Friday, April 23
Saturday, April 24
Friday, April 30
Saturday, May 1
A signed detour will direct drivers to exit at Martin Luther King Way (exit 157) to Airport Way and back onto I-5 via Edgar Martinez Way/SR 519. Crews will reopen the roadway by 8 a.m. each morning.
Drivers should consider taking alternate routes such as I-405 or SR 99 to avoid long delays and backups during the closures.
I-5 Martin Way to 48th Street NB and SB (milepost 109 to 114)– LONG TERM ROAD AND LANE CLOSURES
WSDOT is replacing 295 concrete panels and installing more than 56,000 dowel bars to support the roadway on 25.5 miles of I-5 between Martin Way in Lacey and 48th Street in Tacoma to create a smoother driving surface. Construction will require nightly lane closures and some weekend closures of I-5 in Thurston and Pierce Counties through August 13th. During construction there will be a total of nine weekend closures. Detours will be in place when possible.
April 24 to 25 - I-5 northbound CLOSED beginning 10:00 PM Saturday to 10:00 AM Sunday from exit 111 to exit 114.
April 30 to May 2 - I-5 Lakewood/Tacoma SB - Extended Triple Lane Closure (7 p.m. Friday to 11 a.m. Saturday and 7 p.m. Saturday to noon Sunday)
Weekend lane closures on I-5 between Martin Way and Mounts Road could create up to 15-mile backups.
Weekend lane closures on I-5 between Gravelly Lake and 48th Street could create up to 10-mile backups.
And it goes on until August 13th!

Alaskan Way Viaduct and Battery Street Tunnel Single Lane Closures through May 7
SDOT crews will close single curb lanes on the Alaskan Way Viaduct between 9 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during the next three weeks to clean the viaduct's curb areas and perform other maintenance work. The crews plan to close one southbound lane at a time from April 19 to April 27. They plan to close one northbound lane at a time from April 28 to May 7.
First Ave S -
Saturday Landscape Work
Seattle Department of Transportation
Urban Forestry crews will assist the community with landscaping on First
Avenue South, from South King Street to Yesler Way, on Saturday, April 24.
Traffic lanes will remain open but will be shifted, using the parking
lanes on both sides of the street, to allow for safe work in the street
median. They plan to work from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. This project is part of
Saturday's Clean and Green event in Pioneer Square.

Eastbound S Spokane
Street Viaduct Off-ramp to 4th Ave S Ahead of Schedule - Ramp now set to
open summer/fall 2010
Work to complete the new eastbound 4th
Ave S off-ramp from the S Spokane St Viaduct is ahead of schedule!
Originally set to open for use by December 2010, the new ramp is likely to
open in late summer or early fall. Once utility work and paving are
completed, expected by early summer, eastbound lower Spokane Street will
be reopened and crews can then join the new ramp to the existing elevated
structure. This is the final construction step in the creation of the new
off-ramp, but it will require the closure of the eastbound right-hand lane
of the viaduct between 1st and 4th avenues for approximately two months.
As a reminder, the next major milestone in the South
Spokane Street Viaduct Project, which began the fall of 2008, is around
the corner. On May 17, 2010, crews will close the westbound 1st Ave
S on-ramp and prepare it for demolition. This makes way for work to widen
the upper roadway 41 feet to the north, and build a new on and off-ramp
along 1st Ave S that should open in the fall of 2011.
In the
sixteen months during which there will be no access to the Spokane Street
Viaduct from surface streets in SODO, southbound vehicles approaching
Spokane on 1st Ave S will be detoured to the low level swing bridge to get
to West Seattle. To reduce the expected congestion on this bridge during
construction, SDOT is working with the U.S. Coast Guard, the Port of
Seattle and others, and planning for signal timing adjustments and
uniformed police officers to help guide traffic. Other alternative routes
are noted in the attached map.
The 60-year-old S Spokane St Viaduct
carries 65,000-70,000 vehicles daily between I-5 and the West Seattle
Bridge. Once this project is completed, the elevated roadway between 6th
Ave S and E Marginal Way will have wider lanes and shoulders, a new
westbound acceleration/deceleration lane, and an additional eastbound lane
between 1st Ave S and 4th Ave S. The project also includes seismic
strengthening of the viaduct, and a new 10-foot wide sidewalk on the north
side of lower S Spokane St that can accommodate pedestrians and
bicycles.
