SODO Inc. BBQ
SODO Inc. is a short-term job training program for young
adults that includes four weeks of training and four weeks of job
experience. Since the program was established last summer, 117 young
people have enrolled, 100 made it through training, and of that number, 60
successfully completed the job experience.
But, the numbers don't
tell the whole story. Much of the target audience is comprised of young
people who have created major barriers for themselves in finding gainful
employment. For this population, the SODO Inc. completion rate is
unusually high and 14 of the interns wound up getting full-time jobs (and
benefits) from the employers.
The third round of SODO Inc. will
kick off in July, but before it does, Seattle Industry wanted to
acknowledge the contributions (and patience) of the participating private
companies and public agencies. So, we're throwing a barbeque for them
Friday, June 11, 4-6 pm at the Manufacturing Industrial Council compound
at 6770 East Marginal Way.
Admission, food and drinks are free.
RSVP with Pam at 206-762-2470 or pam@seattleindustry.org.
The
employers are:
ASKO Processing, Balancing Services, B&G
Machine, Baley Roofing, Brace Point Railings, Bryant Concrete, Cascade
Gasket, CDL Recycle, City of Federal Way Parks Department, Highland
Refrigeration, King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks,
Laird Plastics, MC Electric Vehicle, Metro Wastewater Treatment, Northwest
Grating, Outdoor Research, Pacific Fisherman Shipyards, Puget Sound
Coatings, RID OF IT, Roadlink, Rottler Manufacturing, SeaTac Marine, City
of Seattle Parks, Star Kids, The Finish Company, The Rudd Company,
Washington Chain, Western Logistics and Western Neon.
SODO Inc. is
a partnership between King County, South Seattle Community College, the
Duwamish Apprenticeship and Education Center, the Puget Sound Industrial
Excellence Center and the Manufacturing Industrial Council with funding
from the Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County.

$25Million in Federal Grants Are Available to US Manufacturers – Why
Not a Washington Company? Why Not Your Company? The America
Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology,
Education, and Science (COMPETES) was enacted to invest in innovation
through research and development and to improve the competitiveness of the
United States. CREATES created the Technology Innovation Program (TIP) to
support, promote, and accelerate innovation in the United States through
high-risk, high-reward research in areas of critical national need.
Area of Critical National Need: Manufacturing
The
goal of the research outcome/impacts from this competition is to provide
manufacturers and end users improved access to adequate quantities of
materials based on new advances at competitive costs that allow evaluation
and utilization of these materials in innovative ways, and new
manufacturing processes that can transform the way products are made.
TIP's $25 million funding strategy for this competition will
emphasize three important elements:
1) Process scale-up,
integration and design for materials advances; 2) Predictive modeling
for materials advances and materials processing; and 3) Critical
process advances related to the manufacturability of materials and
manufacturing of both new and existing products.
These three
elements of the societal challenge of accelerating the use of materials
advances and advances in critical processes will be addressed as outlined
in the white paper "Manufacturing and Biomanufacturing: Materials Advances
and Critical Processes" (http://www.nist.gov/tip/cur_comp/index.cfm).
More
information on the grant process can be found at: http://www.grants.gov/search/search.do?mode=VIEW&oppId=53791.

The NE 45th Street
Viaduct will Close from June 14 – September 10
SEATTLE— The NE
45th Street Viaduct's existing west approach is nearing the end of its
structural life and needs to be replaced to maintain a safe and efficient
travel corridor for vehicles, pedestrians and bicycles. SDOT will replace
the 468-foot west approach during the University of Washington's summer
session when traffic volumes are lighter. Between June 14 and September
10, the viaduct will be completely closed to all traffic, pedestrians and
bicycles.
The NE 45th Street viaduct is a major thoroughfare in
northeast Seattle. It connects I-5 and the University District to the
Northeast Seattle neighborhoods, the University Village, the University of
Washington's Husky Stadium, Seattle Children's Hospital, and businesses
along Sand Point Way NE.
The contractor has begun site preparation
activities near the NE 45th Street Viaduct. During the closure period this
summer, traffic will be detoured to nearby major arterial streets
including 25th NE and NE 65th Street to the north, and Montlake Boulevard
NE and NE Pacific Street to the south. Please see the project Web site at
www.seattle.gov/transportation/45th-bridge for specifics on detour routes
and options to bike, bus and walk around the area.
SDOT will host
an open house on June 9 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the University Heights
Community Center (5031 University Way NE) to talk with neighbors about
construction impacts and prepare the traveling public for the closure and
detour.
