A Rubik’s
Cube in a Rubik’s Cube
SODO is about to be the site of $1 billion in construction projects that
will result in significant, long-lasting traffic disruptions. You can learn
more about what's on the horizon at a community forum Thursday, April 10,
8:00-9:30AM, in the Diamond Club at Safeco Field.

by the Duwamish Transportation Management Association and it will provide a
chance to hear the current city and state timelines for the projects and
the government plans to try to keep traffic moving.
A major repaving of 1st Avenue South will get underway later this spring,
it will be the first in a series of construction projects in the next 2-3
years that will include completion of the SR 519 freight project next to the
sports stadiums, a new grade seperation for East
Marginal Way, the widening of the Spokane Viaduct with a new ramp to 4th
Ave S, and reconstruction of the south end of the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
City and state transportation planners are still attempting to put together
the detours and other mitigation plans to maintain traffic flow during
construction. One planner recently referred to the challenge as trying to
solve "a Rubik's Cube in a Rubik's Cube."
The chore will probably be further complicated by the likely termination of
the Lander Street Overpass project. That overpass was seen as a key to
east-west traffic during viaduct reconstruction but the City of Seattle has proposed
tabling the project for lack of funding.
