Industrial Lands
Many people lost track
of this topic in the year-end bustle, but the City Council closed out 2007
by voting 6-3 in favor of new restrictions on non industrial retail and
office development in Seattle industrial zones.
Councilmember Richard McIver, one of the key supporters of the legislation,
will provide a report on this topic at the January 22 meeting of the MIC
Executive Committee. McIver will appear between 4 and 5 p.m. The briefing
will include technical information about the changes that apply in I-G1 and
I-G2 zones. The changes impact about 5,000 acres of industrial land.
The meeting will be held in the MIC meeting room at 5509 1st Avenue South in Georgetown. The

The legislation responded to a major study of industrial lands by the city
planning commission and a new initiative by Mayor Greg Nickels to support
industrial businesses. The final legislative package was worked out through
a compromise between Councilmember Peter Steinbrueck and the Mayor. In
addition to Steinbrueck and McIver, the legislation was supported by councilmembers Sally Clark, Jean Godden, Nick Licata,
and David Della. It was opposed by Richard Conlin,
Tom Rasmussen and Jan Drago.
