Nucor Steel Growing
Production and jobs are
growing at Nucor's West Seattle steel
plant as result of the growing international appetite for steel. The
Washington State Department of Ecology and the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency
recently approved a new permit that will allow Nucor to increase production
by 38%, from 795 tons to 1.1 million tons per year.
With this increase, the company will add a production shift of 20 to 25 new
workers to the present payroll of 290. Nucor workers earn a wage and
profit-sharing package that averages about $95,000 per year. The company
estimates the production increase will add about $12.2 million annually in
new payroll and local taxes while increasing City Light Revenue by almost
$5 million.
The West Seattle plant recently began shipping billets to plants in the Philippines, Indonesia
and Taiwan where they
are converted into rebar for new highways, bridges and high rise buildings
throughout Asia.
Washington Manufacturing Up
The upward trend slowed,
but growth continued for manufacturing in western Washington in February, according to a
regional survey of supply managers. The report by the National Association
of Purchasing Management – Western Washington (NAPM-WW) shows that February
manufacturing activity here rated a 61 score on its scale of 50. Numbers
below 50 mean business is contracting. Numbers above 50
show business is growing. The February score for U.S. manufacturing was 48, according to the
national survey by the Institute
of Supply Management.
Exports Set Record
U.S. exports grew by 13% in 2007,
reaching a record value of $1.6 trillion, according to a report March 11 by
the U.S. Department of Commerce. That represented 12% of US GDP in the
fourth quarter of 2007, up from 9% of GDP in 2002 and 5% of GDP in 1967.

Marine Environmental Business of the Year Award
Nominations are being accepted for companies that exemplify innovative and
effective environmental initiatives that support Seattle's maritime
industry efforts towards becoming the "cleanest, greenest, most energy
efficient Port in the region." The Port of Seattle
and the Seattle Propeller Club will present this first annual award at the
Seattle Maritime Festival Luncheon on Friday, May 2, 2008.

April 10 Forum on SODO Transportation Construction
A community forum will
be held in the Diamond Club at Safeco Field on Thursday, April 10, starting
at 8:30 am to discuss a series of major transportation construction
projects that will get underway this spring. The projects include
completion of SR 519 adjacent to the sports stadiums, repaving of 1st Avenue South
and construction of new ramps connecting 4th Avenue South to the Spokane
Street Viaduct. Other planned projects include major repairs to the south
end of the Alaskan Way Viaduct and repaving of Lander Street.
The forum will feature presentations and Q&A sessions with project
managers from the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and
the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT). The forum is sponsored by
the Duwamish Transportation Management Association and the event is open to
