In 1988, Marty Brashem became one of the first US metal brokers to import products to the United States from China, bringing in ingot molds that he sold to the steel plant in West Seattle. But that deal was extraordinary; most of Marty's business was focused on the United States and Canada.

Twenty years later, international transactions are ordinary for his sons Mark and Marvin Brashem, who trade metals for customers throughout North America, South America and Asia.

For these efforts, the Brashem's company, M B Metals, was awarded an Export Achievement Award this week by the U.S. Department of Commerce, along with Nordic Tug of Burlington and Greenwood Technologies in Bellevue.

The awards were presented June 2 during a reception at Salty's on Alki shortly following publication of a major story in the Seattle Times documenting the robust good health of many US industrial sectors. To see the story, go here.

Industrial Jobs Initiative - Your Voice
The MIC teamed up last year with labor, the Port, environmentalists and community groups to persuade the City Council to pass legislation to reduce non-industrial office and retail development on industrial lands in Seattle.

The City is hosting an Open House on June 18th to gather your suggestions regarding additional measures that can betaken to support the city's industrial base.

Too much city governmental regulation? Incompatible uses getting closer and closer? Too many potholes? Too many bridges with weight restrictions? Can't get your trucks or employee in or out of your worksite? Let the city know what's on your mind.

The open house is Wednesday, June 18th, 4:00-7:00 pm, at the Puget Sound Industrial Excellence Center-Georgetown Campus, 6737 Corson Ave S, 98108. Look at this pdf for more information.

Duwamish Diamonds
On May 8th two companies located in the Duwamish were honored for their successful Employee Transportation programs at the 14th Annual Commuter Challenge Diamond Award celebration. FRANKE Coffee Systems North America was selected as one of the small employer (less than 100 employees) Outstanding Voluntary Commute Program Diamond Award winners. After moving from Ballard in 2006, FRANKE (then Espresso Specialists) wanted to make sure as many of their employees as possible made the move to Georgetown with them. The company initiated an Employee Transportation Benefit and supplied a FlexPass to all employees. Today nearly 100% of their employees use an alternative commute mode some portion of each month!! Congratulations to FRANKE!!

Perennial Diamond Award recipient, Starbucks Coffee Company, was also acknowledged as one of the region's Pacesetters for their on going excellence in employee commute trip reductions programs. Well done STARBUCKS!!
