Parking Pinch
If all goes according to schedule, next Tuesday, September 16, parking will be prohibited beneath the Spokane Street Viaduct between 1st and 5th Avenues at the southern end of SODO.

This may not sound like a big deal, but it is. The parking ban will last for at least two years and it's part of a trend that will see nearly 2000 parking spaces eliminated in SODO and Pioneer Square as a result of construction activity involving the Alaskan Way Viaduct, SR 519 and the Spokane Street Viaduct.

And, while those parking spots disppear, demand for parking in north SODO will be growing in 2009 as transit service starts at the new Sound Transit stations near the sports stadiums and near Fourth and Lander.

These and other transportation impacts will be explained and discussed at a community forum Tuesday, September 30, at the Diamond Club in Safeco Field. The forum follows up on a meeting held last June with Seattle City Councilmember Jan Drago, chair of the council transportation committee. The forum will include an update on SODO area transportation projects as well as a report on the status of the SODO Action Plan and recommendations by a community group that studied growing conflicts on First Avenue south between cars, trucks, bicycles and pedestrians.

The forum is sponsored by the Duwamish Transportation Management Association (TMA) and the SODO Business Association with an assist from the Seattle Mariners. The forum lasts from 8-9:30 AM. B&G Machine in Georgetown is included in a story in today's Wall Street Journal about areas in the country that are enjoying benefits from the export boom. The story begins on the front page and B&G vice president Johnny Bianchi is quoted on the back page in fifth column of the story. WSJ reporter Tim Aeppel made the connection through the Northwest Industrial Index that is prepared for Seattle Industry by the Manufacturing Industrial Council of Seattle.

Alaskan Way Viaduct 'Scoping Open House'
WSDOT, King County, City of Seattle and the Federal Highways Administration are hosting a series of public scoping open houses throughout Seattle. Come learn about the plan to take down the central waterfront section of the viaduct in 2012, and give us your comments about the options we are currently studying.

What is a "scoping open house"?
This is an opportunity for you to review current project information and tell us what issues – such as noise, air quality, traffic, etc – should be considered in the central waterfront environmental document.

S Spokane St (lower roadway) closure - S Spokane St; from 1st Ave to 5th Ave, will closed to through traffic starting Tuesday, September 16th (they changed the date) until mid 2010. Local business access will be allowed, but limited to entry points between 1st and 2nd Ave throughout the duration of the project. Also, no parking will be allowed under the S Spokane St viaduct from 2nd Ave to 5th Ave; signs will be posted and violators will be towed. During this time contractors will be relocating a water-main in preparation for the construction of the eastbound 4th Ave off-ramp.
