Blethen Guest Speaker at MIC Banquet

Frank Blethen, publisher of the Seattle Times, will be the keynote speaker at the 10th Anniversary Banquet for the Manufacturing Industrial Council of Seattle on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at the Rock Salt Steakhouse on Lake Union.

Blethen will address a number of issues including news media coverage of the 2008 U.S. presidential race.

Other banquet guests will include Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and the new chancellor of the Seattle Community College District, Jill Wakefield.

Tickets are $100 with a meal option between prime rib and a vegetarian plate. Sign up at 206-762-2470.

The banquet is preceded by a no-host bar starting at 5:30. Dinner will be served at 6:15. The program will conclude by 7:30.

150 Teachers Attend Green Expo
One hundred and fifty teachers attended the first-ever Green Industrial Business and Career Expo held last month at the Puget Sound Industrial Excellence Center (PSIEC) on the Georgetown campus of South Seattle Community College. The teachers were among 400 people who turned out for the event featuring 50 exhibits highlighting different aspects of industrial energy conservation and renewable energy generation.

Teachers were a primary audience for the Expo and they came from a 120-mile radius ranging from Bellingham to Puyallup. One goal was to help educators understand that the "green" collar jobs and professions of tomorrow will be rooted in many of the industrial jobs and professions that exist today.

Exhibitors and sponsors included The Boeing Company, PACCAR, United Technologies, Nucor Steel, MulvannyG2 Architecture, MacDonald Miller Facility Solutions, Seattle City Light and Puget Sound Energy.

Cosponsors included the Manufacturing Industrial Council, the City of Seattle Office of Economic Development, the National Wildlife Federation, the Seattle Community College District and the King County Labor Council.

Tolls on 520 – what do you think?
On November 10, the 520 Tolling Implementation Committee released the results of its second round of evaluation of tolls across Lake Washington. The evaluation looked at a total of nine tolling scenarios, illustrating and comparing different toll rates, bridge funding potential, traffic speeds, diversion and transit use. Five scenarios look at tolling only 520; four look at tolling both 520 and I-90. Find out more about the 520 Tolling Implementation Committee at www.build520.org.

Fourth Ave S and S Michigan St
Beginning last Saturday Nov 15, SDOT will be working on the east side of 4th Ave S just north of S Michigan St. Crews will replace asphalt with concrete in the bus stop lane, and install a new sidewalk and curb bulb. They plan to complete work in 2 wks, weather permitting. Funds from Bridging the Gap transportation initiative are paying for this work.

Planned Detour Route on the Burke-Gilman Trail
Seattle Parks and Recreation is planning to repair damage to the Burke-Gilman trail trestle bridge at University Village, which crosses at NE 45th Place and NE Blakely Place. Construction is slated to begin on Monday, November 24, and will extend through the end of the year. Preparation for planned detours will begin the week of November 17.

Partial detours for pedestrians and bicycles will be in-place during working hours - from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday -- and will be opened for evening and weekend use. Partial pedestrian detours are scheduled to begin November 24, and will change to a 24-hour-a-day closure schedule on December 1, and continue through the end of the year.

Expected detours for vehicles will be in effect at the same time, but under a 24-hour schedule, and will remain during all construction operations through the end of the year.

SR 519 Construction
Starting Monday, Nov. 21, crews will start work on the second phase of WSDOT'S SR 519 Intermodal Access Project. Crews will begin by widening the intersection of First Avenue S. and S. Atlantic Street to add turn lanes and bigger sidewalks. This work will require closing the eastbound right lane of S. Atlantic Street, just west of First Avenue S. from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Nov. 17 - Friday, Nov. 21. For more information, visit www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/sr519

Fixing roadway flooding is not an 'easy fix'
