Manufacturing
Growth?

A regional version of the national survey of purchasing
agents shows that western Washington manufacturing grew in November, but
just barely.
The region scored 51 in the index compiled by the
Western Washington chapter of the National Association of Purchasing
Managers. Any score above 50 suggests growth while scores below 50
indicate contraction.
The national score for November was an
abysmal 36.2, the worst countrywide score since 1980.
Through last
August, when our regional index was a robust 65.8, the manufacturing index
for western Washington had run far above the national average for a four
year period dating back to spring of 2004. From January through August of
this year, the regional index averaged 61.7 compared to 49.4 for the
nation.
But, the regional index plummeted to 37.3 in September,
coinciding with the start of the Boeing strike. The September number was
the worst for our region since 2001, a year when the western Washington
manufacturing index was under 50 for all 12 months of the year.
